Whales are Back to Maui

Humpback whales spend their summer months in Alaska, storing and feeding off of the nutrient rich waters. As soon as the temperature starts to drop they begin their migration South, and although some head to Mexico and other areas of the Pacific, the majority spend their winters in Hawaii. They can be up to 50 tons and most are found in the shallow waters between Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Here the average depth is about 300 feet and a great "kiddie pool" for birthing and teaching newborn calf. With a few local charter boats, and even from off-shore on the Pali, you can see them with the naked eye in their natural habitat. Maui is big on whales, it never gets old. Maui Ocean Center and Pacific Whale Foundation are places on Maui to teach us all about them.
